Charles Frederick Luke, 94, passed away Tuesday, April 21 at NHC Healthcare in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Charlie was born on November 23, 1925 in Lake City, Tennessee to Fred and Myrtle (Harris) Luke. Charlie was preceded in death by his sister, Violet (Luke) Wright and her husband Luke Wright.During his youth the Harris Family: Oscar and Opal (McDaniel) Harris and their children, Terry, Janet, Joan, Don and Bill was an extended family to him and with them he enjoyed a love of exploring nature, gardening and flowers that was a common thread in all his life.After working briefly in Detroit, Michigan he joined the Army at age 20. Charlie served in World War II in France and later re-enlisted in the Army and served in Korea until being honorably discharged at the end of the conflict. His sister Violet's family: Betty, Gary, Linda, and Kay along with their spouses and children provided love and support. Betty and her husband Paul and Gary and his wife Janet lent their love and support often, especially in Charlie's later years as his health declined. He also enjoyed Leighanne Rhea reading the bible to him when his eyesight began to fail.After the Army, Charlie worked in Oak Ridge and was a Teamster driver, supplying the vending machines at the "Plants". During this time, he raised a family in Lake City and Clinton with Velma (Hatmaker) Luke, with son Daniel Luke (wife, Teresa (Terri) Leach Luke) and daughter Lisa (Luke) Yates (husband, John (Randy) Yates). He tended many a garden with Velma's parents, Morton and Opal Hatmaker and was well loved by them.After retirement, along the flowers and squash (lots of squash) Charlie had the love of Grandsons (Dustin) Luke Yates (wife, Kelli Kazmier) and Dakotah Luke and great granddaughter Laila Luke. His years in Marlow, Tennessee were spent in a creekside home Charlie made with his surviving wife Willa (Nolan) Luke, whom he loved dearly. Her children, and their grandchildren and great grandchildren became his family. April and James Gates, Connor Gates, Allison Graves, Genie Martinez and Nick Allen are among the many of the "grands" & "greats" that he loved and loved him dearly.Charlie will be remembered for his devotion to Church, Fraterville Baptist & Popular Creek Baptist, service to his country and love of family. His kindness and easy-going nature were evident to anyone that knew him or met him along his life's journey. He will be greatly missed on earth, but the gardens and creatures in Heaven will rejoice at his arrival.Due to current world circumstances, the Luke family has decided to have a private graveside service.
