Mary Martha graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in education and went on to earn a Master's degree from UT in Library Science. She did advance studies in education at the University of Michigan, Western Michigan University and the University of Alabama, Huntsville where she was part of NASA's Teacher in Space Program. Her teaching career began at Central High School in Wartburg, Tn., moved on to Norris Middle School (formerly Glen Alpine) in Norris, Tn. and continued for nearly 30 years at Rogers High School in Wyoming, Mi. as media specialist. She played varsity basketball at Oliver Springs High School in Oliver Springs, Tn. which led to a lifetime love of the Lady Vols basketball program at UT. She loved not only going to basketball games, but football, baseball and softball were also among her favorites. She was an accomplished pianist and a great lover of many types of music and was a loyal supporter of the University of Tennessee Pride of the Southland Marching Band. She was an accomplished chef and seamstress; immaculate housekeeper, consummate hostess; her wit and compassion for others were legend. She was a fierce light that brought joy to our family. She was an avid golfer who enjoyed playing in leagues, tournaments, outings and occasionally beating her husband. Many happy warm days were spent on her boat on Tellico Lake or on her deck overlooking the golf course. Travel eventually became a passion due to numerous vacations throughout the country and foreign trips to Europe. She and a friend spent a week in Paris as a retirement gift. Travel eventually was done via a motorhome which led to friendships throughout the United States.
One of her greatest loves were her schnauzers. Alex was the first in 1988, then Max, and finally the boys - Fozzy and Dooley (who is still alive). Other than Alex, all were rescue dogs which she steadfastly supported. If anyone ever wanted to know what a spoiled dog that was truly loved looked like, you only had to meet one of those four. Each time she lost one, she swore she would never have another one, but always did.A celebration of life will be scheduled in early 2023.Memorials or donations can be made to Second Harvest of East Tennessee (Tax ID 58-1450139), Adopt-a-Class Tn (TN ID Number C034738), Sarge's Animal Rescue Foundation, Inc.
